The photos below were taken in the late 1960's and 1970's. They are were
some of the last buildings still standing. You can see the tall office
buildings going in all around. Most of these original
structures are now gone. Stores moved out of the downtown area because of lack
of parking and crime. For all the tearing down and rebuilding, not one
homeless person was displaced. Phoenix started to become run down about 1958
and steadily deteriorated as people started shopping at the new malls in
safer neighborhoods.
